Nerdy Girls Farm Ginger CSA

Baby Ginger Harvest

What is a CSA?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a system where people buy shares in a local farm’s harvest, paying upfront for a specific crop or season and receive scheduled deliveries of products from the farm. This supports farmers financially up front, and provides members with locally-grown food.

Are there any risks to joining a CSA?

Yes. Weather, pests, and crop failure can mean that the farm is unable to produce what they expected to produce and members may not always receive what was offered up front. We do our best to mitigate these risks, but we want to be honest about the fact that they exist.

Why would I want to join a CSA?

People join one for many reasons. From the convenience of having food regularly delivered without needing to continuously order, to a desire to be socially conscious about your food choices. Farmers use CSAs to help them regulate farm revenue and better understand market demands so that there is less food waste from overproduction. A local economy is a circular economy that helps everyone in the community.

How does joining the Nerdy Girls Farm CSA help me?

We’re offering a ginger-specific CSA offering for delivery in October, November, and December of 2024.

Here’s what you get:

October (in time for Thanksgiving) : Fresh ginger with leaves (½ pound) and a box of our After Dinner Ginger Tea (enough for a medium sized Thanksgiving gathering)

November: Two different kinds of pickled ginger. Thin gari, sometimes called Sushi Ginger as well as a thicker-cut ginger that is great to add to salads to give them a bit of zing.

December (before Christmas): Two packages of candied ginger and a jar of our Ginger and Rhubarb jam (both make great gifts)

Why is Nerdy Girls Farm doing a Ginger CSA?

We’ve been growing ginger and turmeric for a number of years now. We start it in warm rooms and then put it outside once the weather is warm enough. Despite the recent temperatures, Nova Scotia is not a tropical environment, which ginger and turmeric both want and need. We want to be able to convert an existing building on our farm to a greenhouse so that we can keep ginger and turmeric growing year round, and give them their full 10-month growing cycle.

How do these two things come together? We are asking fans of our ginger and ginger products to help us get to our 2024 revenue goal by joining a Ginger CSA. Once our revenue goal is met, we can apply for funding to convert that building into a greenhouse. The greenhouse will be able to grow bigger, better ginger (and maybe some other semi-tropical plants) in the years to come..
